In Exercise 12 of Chapter 1 a study of characteristics of a successful salespersons indicated that 44 of 120 sales managers rated reliability as the most important characteristic in salespersons. A study of a different industry showed that 60 of 150 sales managers rated reliability as the most important characteristic of a successful salesperson.
a.) At the 0.05 significance, do these opinions differ from one industry to the other?
H0: Null Hypothesis: p1 =p2 ( these opinions do not differ from one industry to the other)
HA: Alternative Hypothesis: p1 p2 ( these opinions differ from one industry to the other) (Claim)
n1 = 120
n2 = 150
1 = 44/120 = 0.3667
2 = 60/150 = 0.4
= 0.05
Pooled Proportion is given by:
Test Statistic is given by:
From Table, critical values of Z = 1.96
Since calculated value of Z = - 0.559 is greater than critical value of Z = - 1.96, the difference is not significant. Fail to reject null hypothesis.
Conclusion:
The data do not support the claim that these opinions differ from
one industry to the other.
