The concept of successful aging is equated with a satisfactory life, good health and happiness. Though it has long been the subject of debate and inquiry, successful aging can be summarized into three major factors: It includes disease and disability-free life, physical and cognitive functioning and active engagement with life.

Freedom from disease and disability: The longevity goal of successful aging can be achieved by early detection and prevention of diseases, healthful nutrition, vaccinations and a strong social support group.

High physical and cognitive functioning: As a person ages he realizes the gradual changes in body functioning. There is a considerable reduction in muscle power, strength, balance and walking ability. The body cannot cope up with diseases in the same way it used to. To age successfully a person needs to have a good physical and mental health. Regular exercises, avoiding alcohol and drugs, memory training, mental excercises help to achieve aging goals.

Active engagement with life: A person successfully ages if he feels life has been rewarding,he has met maximum goals and has few regrets. Being surrounded by loving and caring family members and friends, pursuing intersting hobbies and having an active engagement with life through social support gives the required boost to the overall well being.
