Tony has had a bad virus and has had to stay in bed for the last ten days. Tony now wants to continue training for that marathon (26 miles) race which will be in one week. He says he has to train by running at least 18 miles a day. What could happen to Tony and what would you advise Tony based on your knowledge of muscles

Expert Solution

The sick people don’t have strength to walk and run for some distance, this is because the muscle tone and strength will be reduced after any sickness due to less intake of food, low metabolism, less absorption of food in the gut.

Here, in this case Tony had infection and had 10 days of bed rest so there will be muscle wasting, weakness of the body. The marathon needs more muscle strength and muscle power and energy. Any person after cured from any infection they should take some rest and build up their muscle power and weakness.

Tony needs 606 calories to burn for 1hour of running and of 5 miles, but Tony says he want to run for 18 miles distance so he needs more calories as well as strength.

I can say Tony not to go for marathon race and it is impossible to practice for 18 miles a day, so he has to get back normal and later on he can attend it. LIFE IS IMPORTANT THAN ANYTHING so we should take care of health and then can go for any race. Tony should be able to take our words then he might not go into a big problem.

HEALTH EDUCATION to be given regarding the following:-

1. Nutritional support: running needs more calories which can get from diet. Proteins and hydration keeps body fit.

  • 8 ounces of water to be taken before running

Carbohydrate and protein loaded snacks can be taken before hand

2. Exercise:? Muscles should be trained every day, strengthening of lower and upper body muscles improves the run.

  • 20-30 minutes per day should be scheduled every day
  • each upper and lower body muscles plays a main role in running so it should not be skipped

MUSCLES involved in running starts with legs and toning the calves, shins, quads. The upper muscles also involves abdominal and core muscles.

A firm core muscles act as a girdle, keeping the back straight and a straight supported spine is must for running.

The chest and the arms should not be neglected because while running we swing our shoulders and arms, if we don’t train them then we can feel strain over our neck region .
