Recall from Homework 2 that you are the chief robot designer for U.S. Robots and Mechanical Men, Inc., and you are working on designs for the following robots:
(a) A delivery robot that will carry supplies to different departments in a hospital.
(b) A supply robot that will carry heavy loads across loose soil and sand.
(c) A security robot that has to secure a wooded, hilly, area.
(d) A butler robot that will greet guests in a home and bring them drinks.
For each robot, describe what sensors you will equip it with, justifying your choices. Remember that, despite its monopoly, U.S. Robots and Mechanical Men, Inc. is a business, so you need to think carefully about the cost/benefit ratio of the sensors
ANSWERS :
ANS a) A delivery robot that will carry supplies to different departments in a hospital. It will use following sensor:
Grip sensors : as these robots need to carry supplies it is important for them to have a tight grip so as the materials do not fall and break. Apart from this Force sensor can also be used if the supplies are heavy to carry.
ANS b) A supply robot that will carry heavy loads across loose soil and sand. It will use following sensor :
Force sensor - this is because they are designed in such a way to pick heavy loads , so it will be most apt.
ANS c) A security robot that has to secure a wooded, hilly, area. It uses following sensor :
Infrared Sensor - this is because we will use this for security so the robot which will be able to see at night will be best to secure the area, and since it is hilly there will be fog so only infrared sensor will make it possible to gaurd the area.
ANS d) A butler robot that will greet guests in a home and bring them drinks. It will use following sensor:
Emotion Sensors - this will help the robot to detect the mood of the guests and greet them the way their mood is. Apart from this sound sensors can also be used to make the experience better.
