Sex of a person is determined by biology while gender is constructed by society. The gender role as a man or a woman differs culturally among different societies, classes, age as per what is considered as feminine or masculine by that culture. It is a kind of organizing principle of society taking care of the process of production, reproduction, consumption, and distribution. For example, according to gender, a boy is not supposed to cry as crying apparently is a weak act so perceived as feminine. In case of a girl, she is not supposed to be strong and aggressive. In this way, society has constructed stereotypes and when people who do not fit neatly into these parameters are made to suffer. They are made to feel isolated, alone and inadequate. These genders stereotypes are harmful to any society as they inhibit people to fully express themselves and their emotions. 15 lines or more
Gender is surely a societal construct which puts restrictions on individuals in a multidimensional way . This has led to marginalisation of many groups . Society has developed a hetetronormative lens in which other secual orientaitons and genders are seen as culprits or they have to face social exclusion. Gender stereotypes which are prevalent in society have resulted in mental health problems to many individuals. We can take examples of men and women both . In case of men they are seen as the financial earners and from the very beginning of their childhood they are told not to cry or not to behave like girls . This has affected their emotional vent out process. Most of the times they aren ot able to express their emotions because they think society will judge them and they fear social exclusion . They fear to take roles which are seen as exclusively for women from the social constructivist viewpoint. Similarly in case of women they are seen as housewives in most of the societies and women who try to break this gender stereotype are considered as character less and this often leads to slutshaming and other types of crimes . Gender as a social construct has affected the lives of both women and men. It creates an environment full of misogynistic and patriarchal attitudes and society tends to put restriction on individuals through it . Similar non binary individuals are socially excluded because they do not fit in the structure which is set up by the society . As because of this we have witnessed so many racial and gendered violence attacks. There is a need to change the heternormative perspective which is prevalent in society .
