Identify steps that a parent can take to promote high self-esteem and high self-efficacy in a child. Address the child’s motor, cognitive, language, and social skills development.

Self esteem is an individuals overall outlook , both internal and external about himself. That is how a person value or rate about himself. Following are the steps to promote high self esteem

  • Express your love and acceptance to your child by spending time with him
  • Always be consistent in rules and reinforcement
  • Give them the oppurtunity to express their decisions and choices in homely matters
  • Try to create a peaceful enviroment in home, this makes them feel comfortable
  • Give consistent support to your children whenever they face drawbacks in their lives
  • Envourage them to participate in social activities which have prominent role in their psycho social development
  • Encourage them to do physical activities; remember a healthy physique can contribute greatly to mental health

Self efficacy is the attutude and belief a person has about himself in successfully completing a task or utilizing a situation. A child with increased self efficacy will be optimistic and feel confident in managing situations. Following are the steps to improve self efficacy

  • Try something innovative
  • Set short term goals--Always try moderately difficult task than task with high difficulty. This makes a task more easy to handle
  • Be specific. Always prepare a schedule for the taks to be completed. For this you can try a step by step procedure
  • Always give positive reinforcement. If child fails in a task, and parents should convince them that failure is natural and motivate them to continue
  • Provide opportunity for children to face failures. This makes them feel confident to rely on internal strategies to adapt to them. Whenever children face setbacks teach them that continued attempt is a great learning experience. Each effort in the child should be praised.
  • Provide opportunity to make their own choices and decisions, this will improve their assertiveness and communication skills.
  • Create models. By observing models a child feels that "if he can complete it, so i also can". This will increase the internal motivation to put effort to solve a problem.
