A sample of hydrated barium chloride (BaCl2) has a mass of 8.26 g. After dehydration, the anhydrous sample has a mass of 7.04 g. What is the correct name for the hydrate

Solutions

Expert Solution

Hydrated barium chloride is BaCl2.XH2O is 8.26 gm

Anhydrous barium chloride BaCl2 is 7.04 gm

Mass of water =mass of hydrated barium chloride is BaCl2.XH2O -mass of anhydrous barium chloride BaCl2

                      = 8.26-7.04 = 1.22 gm

no of moles of water = weight of water/ gram molar mass of water

                                = 1.22/18 =0.068 moles of water

molar mass of Bacl2 = 1*137+ 2835.5 = 208

no of moles of anhydrous BaCl2 = 7.04/208

                                                  = 0.0338 moles of BaCl2

find the moles water to BaCl2 = 0.068/00338 = 2 moles Water/ 1 mole BaCl2

correct hydrated Bacl2 formula is BaC2.2H2O
