In the space below, diagram a short visceral reflex. You may use the diagram for the long reflex shown above as a guide. (And you can keep it simple with text only, like this: “Part 1 ? Part 2 ? Part 3, etc…).
There are a few short reflexes of the GI system. Below is a list of short reflexes. Research each reflex and describe its action on the GI tract. Your textbook will have information on each of these.
Short Reflex | Action |
Gastrocolic reflex | |
Enterogastric reflex | |
Gastro-ileal reflex |
Thank you
Action of the following reflexes on the GI tract are discussed below
1) The short reflexes reacts to the digestive movements. and chemical changes. Further, short reflexes to the digestive system provide shortcuts for the enteric nervous system to act quickly and efficiently.
2) The gastrocolic reflex is a normal involuntary reaction to food entering the stomach. Such a reflex increases movement in the gastrointestinal tract, and reacts to stretches in the stomach walls and in the colon. It develops the urge to defecate so as to make room for more food within the stomach.
3) Enterogastric reflex releases acid in the duodenum/stomach, and suppresses the release of digestive proteins. Just like gastrocolic reflex, it is also responsible for the urge to defecate, the movement of digested material in the small intestine so as to make space within the stomach.
4) Gastro-ileal reflex stimulate stomach by stretching, presence of food or cephalic stimulation. The reflex increases the small intestine activity, prepares for incoming chyme, and is responsible for the urge of defecation.
