Do you think there should be official minimum qualifications for Supreme Court justices? What sort of criteria should presidents use when selecting nominees for the SC?
Till now there is no specific qualification required to be a supreme court justice in US the person must me nominated by president and passed by majority in senate and get officially sworn. There must be prescribed minimum qualification to achieve the position. Over the time the importance and relevance of supreme court is increasing and hence need for professional justice has also increased. The one especially connected to legal field and having experience in same could be a better candidate to take the position rather then a non legal person. A person having practised in judiciary could better take office and handle the responsibiliy well.
There is no specific criteria as to qualification of a sc justice .The names of potential nominees are often recommended by senators or sometimes by members of the House who are of the President's political party. Since there are no formal requirements apart from what have been discussed uptil now. But president may follow some informal criteria to nominate the candidatesA nominee should be an attorney of impeccable record who graduated from a top tier law school , middle aged, ideally be a sitting Federal Judge, preferably a Court of Appeals Judge, or otherwise be a State Supreme Court Justice or hold a sufficiently high enough ranking public office, previously held a public office relating to the judiciary.
All this criteria ensures a well suitable candidature and enhance the SC with its unique talent.
