10. Which of the following changes will affect the activation energy of a reaction? 1. Increasing or decreasing the reaction temperature. 2. Adding a catalyst. 3. Increasing or decreasing the reactant concentrations. A) 1 only B) 2 only C) 3 only D) 1 and 2 E) 1, 2, and 3

Solutions

Expert Solution

Changing the temperature of a reaction does not change the activation energy. It can change the rate of collisions and the fraction of effective collisions.

Catalyst is a substance which does not take part in reaction but provides a new or alternative path with low activation energy for reactants.

It has following properties:

  1. Catalyst can change the rate of the reaction by providing a new or alternative path.
  2. Catalyst can low the activation energy for reactants.
  3. Catalyst is not taking part in reaction; hence it can regenerate in its original state after the completion of reaction.
  4. In general; a catalyst increases the rate of reaction.
  5. Catalyst does not affect the equilibrium means in both case the equilibria are identical.

The rate of reaction can increase by increasing the concentration of one or more reactant due to more molecules come closer to each other for collision.

Hence Adding a catalyst will affect the activation energy of a reaction

B) 2 only
