Ulcerative colitis is a severe condition of bowel obstruction and a patient who underwent proctocolectomy and total colectomy require proper nursing care. It Include
- provision of comfortable positioning to alleviate pain.
- maintaining the patient well hydrated by administerimg IV Fluids as per orders.
-provision of psychological support to the patient as he is having body image disturbances .
- Assist in daily a needs.
Care of patient after colon resection;
After colon resection, the patient is taken to the postanesthesia recovery unit (PACU) and is closely monitored by the nursing staff until the anesthesia wears off. Nothing may be taken by mouth until it is certain that normal colon function has resumed.
On the day after surgery, most patients can get out of bed and move around. It is important to get up as soon as possible, because physical activity stimulates bowel function and helps blood circulation return to normal.
Patient may experience pain for fist 3 -5 days.
