What, in your opinion, are the most important issues facing the United states in terms of immigration and assimilation? How are these issues playing out in your community. What are the implications of these issues for the future of the United States?
United States is dependent on the immigrants for the highly skilled migration population and most of the sophisticated jobs such as the scientists and computer professional are from different countries across the world. USA projects the white majority culture as the popular culture while also try to suppress other cultures by branding them as inferior. This would mean people would be forced to give-up their own cultures and replace them with the American culture. This kind of assimilation wouldn’t be better for a country like America which has got racial groups from all over the world in significant numbers. This country as the economic and military power should respect the cultures of other people and promote them in a multicultural environment as Canada does. This would help the country progress without much internal tensions. This is because there are laws that would control any unwanted unrests that arise because of this multiculturalism. If only US encourages this, it would be able to encourage its citizens to have a society without prejudice and stereotyping which would help them overcome their discriminatory mind-set. Besides, education costs a lot in America, thus most of the youngsters either drop out of college or struggle with the bank loans which would limit number of people become highly qualified and skilled in certain areas which would mean immigration is unavoidable.
