An ice cube with a mass of 0.0750kg is taken from a freezer, where the cube’s temperature was -10.0∞C, and dropped into a glass of water at 0.00∞C.
a) If no heat is gained or lost from outside, how much water will freeze onto the cube?
b) Is it possible to add so much ice to the glass that all the water freezes? Explain.
Here, s = specific heat of ice
L = latent heat of fusion
T = rise in temperature
m = ice cube mass
a) water will freeze onto the cube = (m * s * T)/L
= (0.0750 * 10 * 2.03 * 1000)/(333.55 * 1000)
= 4.564 * 10-3 kg
= 4.564 gm
b) No, it is not possible to add so much ice to the glass that all the water freezes . This is because amount of heat that has to be lost for water to freeze is much high .
