In “The Goal” by Eliyahu Goldratt:
1. How does “The Goal” define a bottleneck resource? Develop your own simple example of a bottleneck to demonstrate. (Not the examples from the book, not artificial examples!)
Example: During the 20-30 minute period before the beginning of classes at Baruch, there are long lines that form in front of the elevators at NVC. This is an indication that elevators become the bottlenecks in the process that transports students from the ground floor to the floors where the classrooms are.
As we all probably know, before we get into the airplane, we have to pass by the gate agents to get our flight ticket checked. Then, you start walking through the tunnel connector, which is the bridge between the gate and the airplane. You start noticing that the passengers before you slow down their pace. All of sudden, this group of passengers stop because we are all about to enter the airplane. The problem here is that we are three disorganized rows of people and now we have to assemble into a single line to be able to go into the plane. That’s because the tunnel connector has a larger capacity (2-3 rows of scattered passengers) than the airplane’s door (one single passenger at a time). The airplane’s door is a bottleneck for both processes of entering and exiting the plane, controlling the flow of passengers through (in and out of) the plane.
