the success of any organization. But it is critical because when it
comprises of miscommunication. In many companies, english is the
most spoken language. But more than what language you speak, it's
important how you convey the message. Morever, while English might
give you importance of non verbal communication which are equally
important in international business.
- Work Ethics- Different Approaches to the
professional communication are one of the workspace norms.
Formality of address is very much important while talking with
colleagues and partners from different countries. Do they prefer
title and surname or the first name? It varies in variouds
countries. Asian Countries like South Korea, China use Mr./Mrs.
Surname. In Countries like America, Canada, they use First Name.
The concept of punctuality varies between cultures in international
business environment. Different ideas of being on time can do
misunderstandings or mis perceptions. For Example-
When American may arrive at meeting few minutes early, an Italian
or Mexican arrive several minutes early minutes after the scheduled
time. (Both are known to "on time")
- Organizational Heirarchy- Organizational
Heirarchy and attitudes towards management varies in very cultures.
Whether the junior or senior colleagues can comfortable speak up in
meetings, questional senior decisions, express their opinions are
dictated by the cultural norms. For Example- Japan a country which
gives value to the social heirarchy, receive status and respect for
seniority and they bring this approach into this workplace. It
helps to define roles and responsibilities. Those in senior
management do respect and expect the formality from their junior
team members. In country like Norway which focuses on societal
equality, they have the flat organizational heirarchy. This can be
informal communication and emphasis on cooperation across the
organization.
