In Alice Goffman's TED Talk, How We're Priming Some Kids for College- And Others for Prison, she states that we are asking kids who live in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods, with the least amount of family resources, in the country's worst schools, facing the toughest time in the labor market, and who experience violence in their neighborhoods every day, "to walk the thinnest possible line." With regard to these issues, Goffman wonders if we can envision a criminal justice system that prioritizes recovery, prevention, and civic inclusion over punishment.
What does it mean to live in a 'disadvantaged neighborhood?' What
are some examples of lacking 'family resources?' What makes schools
the 'worst?' What makes the labor market 'tough'? As a society,
what do you think we can do about these shortcomings? What do you
think the criminal justice system can do to be just (fair) to those
experiencing these forms of social disorganization?
One of the most important things
about three society is the challenge of managing people from all
the backgrounds. While few enjoy all the facilities, most of them
live in a disadvantaged environment where they struggle to live a
normal life as others. One of the most important disadvantage of
living in such an environment restrict these people from access to
housing, medicine, education and employment. Every stage affects
the other stage such as good education impacts one's employment
opportunities. One's employment opportunities would impact one's
economic advancement. These would lead them to a disadvantaged
stage.
People who live in disadvantaged society will be exposed to
violence, drugs, crime and illness. This would further their
resentment and severe their environment which would adversely
affect the society. People who live in disadvantaged conditions
trend to involve in criminal activities because they are supposed
and oppressed by the majority. Majority people who oppress also
enact laws to punish the the offenders. Instead of punishing them
harshly, if they are given enough opportunities, they would be able
to improve their lives. It would not only help them but also the
larger society. It's very important that people get equal
opportunities in order to maintain peace, harmony and growth.
