You would like to combine 3 kg of adipic acid with hexamethyl diamine to produce the polyamide nylon. Calculate a) the amount of ethylene glycol required. b) the amount of by product evolved and c) the amount of polyester produced. c) Differentiate between Nylon 6 and Nylon 6,6.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Adipic acid , compound with hexane-1,6-diamine (1:1) to form Nylon salt.

HO.O=C-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-C=O.OH +NH2-(CH2)6-NH2---->

   adipicacid                                            hexamethyl diamine

[C==O-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-C=O-NH-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-NH2]n
 Nylon 6,6.

Differentiate between Nylon 6 and Nylon 6,6.-

Nylon 6 has monomer unit caprolactam.Used in in apparel, home furnishings, tire cord, hose, conveyer and seat belts, parachutes,racket strings, ropes tents thread, mono filament fishing line,etc.

Nylon-6,6 (PA66) is semicrystalline polyamide monomer is dipic acid and hexamethylene diamine.it has high melting point. Used in bearings and gears.

a) the amount of ethylene glycol required-

In production of Nylon 66 there is no need of ethylene glycol.

b) the amount of by product evolved - 3kg

the amount of polyester produced.-

HOOC-R-COOH + H2N-R-NH2--->[-CO-R-CO-NH-R-NH-]n +nH2O

1.5kg                           1.5kg

MW of adipic acid=146.1412 g/mol=

mole of adipic acid = 1.5 x1000/146.1412=10.264mol

mole of hexamethyl diamine=wt of hexamethyl diamine/MW ofhexamethyl diamine= 1.5x1000g/116.21 g/mol=12.91mole

equmoler ratio is needed for production of polyamide nylone

mole of nylone = 10.264
