"Queer is understood as an umbrella term that refers to a range of sexual identities that are not "straight." (Siobhan B. Somerville). A key concept in queer theory is the notion of "heteronormativity" which refers to institutions, structures of understanding, and practical orientations that make heterosexuality coherent and privileged. "
1. Do you think in modern days the word "queer" is more accepted? Why or why not?
2. Also do you think there should be a non binary option on licenses? Why or why not?
1. Although the society was dominated by the heterosexual people for a long time, society took a turn at the wake of the civil rights movements that brought people back to reality that everyone’s individual rights should be respected as per the constitution. It took people by storm when LGBTQ people come in large numbers to express their sexuality. Law helped them achieve their rights but the society was reluctant to accept them. However, people have come to understand and accept people as they are without much stereotyping these days but there are still some people who believe that it shouldn’t be permitted on religious grounds.
2. The society has come a long way in terms of accepting people who practice various sexuality and they are legally granted the rights even to marriage. This would mean that they should also be included in all the places in forms and stickers where gender is mentioned. When it is only two genders mentioned in the forms or in the licence, it would be a kind of institutional discrimination.
