#. The working diagnosis for viral pneumonia is broad and includes the following: Bacterial pneumonia. Bacterial or viral bronchitis. Fungal pneumonia.
#. There are no treatments for most viral causes of pneumonia. However, if the flu virus is thought to be the cause, antiviral drugs might be prescribed, such as oseltamivir (Tamiflu), zanamivir (Relenza), or peramivir (Rapivab), to decrease the length and severity of the illness.
All patients with viral pneumonia must receive supportive care with the following:
Oxygen
Rest
Antipyretics
Analgesics
Nutrition
Close observation
Intravenous fluids
Mechanical ventilation
#. Counselling for patients with viral pneumonia :-
Get plenty of rest. Getting enough sleep will give your body the strength it needs to fight the illness.
* Take deep breaths and cough several times each hour to loosen up mucus and get it out of your lungs.
* Wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub after blowing your nose or using the bathroom, and before eating.
* Cough or sneeze into a tissue or into your elbow or sleeve.
* If you smoke, stop. Ask your healthcare provider about support groups, medicines, and other ways to help you quit smoking.
* Drink several glasses of water a day. Fluids help thin and loosen up the mucus in your lungs and throat.
* Eat a balanced diet so your body can work its best and heal quickly.

Viral pneumonia is a complication of the viruses that cause colds and the flu. It accounts for about one third of pneumonia cases. The virus invades your lungs and causes them to swell, blocking your flow of oxygen.
Many cases of viral pneumonia clear up on their own within a few weeks. However, severe cases can be life-threatening.
