1. Describe the difference between the properties numbers have in the nominal scale, ordinal scale, and ratio scale of measurement?

2. Describe the relation between scales of measurement and central tendency (mean, median, and mode?).

3. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for the mean, median, and mode in representing a distribution of scores.

4. Describe the relation between scales of measurement and measures of variability (e.g., interquartile range and standard deviation.)

5. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for the interquartile range and standard deviation in describing the variability present in a distribution of scores.

Solutions

Expert Solution

SOLUTION 1) The difference between Nominal, ordinal and Ratio scale of measurement is

Nominal scale of measurement: Nominal scales are used for labeling variables or naming variables, without any quantitative value.

For examples : Type of Gender (male and female)

Name of the countries and Color of hair

Ordinal scale level of measurement: Ordinal scales is the order of the values but the differences between each one is not really known. Like we know that Rank 1 is better than Rank 2, but we don’t know–and cannot quantify–how much better it is.

Likert scale is Ordinal scale level of measurement.

Ratio Scale level of measurement: It tell us the exact value between units and it also have an absolute zero which allows both descriptive and inferential statistics to be applied. You can compare it. Like Xis more taller than Y. Or Z is more heavier than A.

Example: Weight and Height
