1.A mother comes running toward you screaming that something is wrong with her 6-month-old son. After getting consent to provide care, you see the baby is conscious but can not make any sounds and is turning blue.
2.You are dining with your family, you look across the table and see your uncle appears to be choking. You get him up, and proceed with abdominal thrusts. Suddenly, he becomes unresponsive.
What do you do next? Describe your actions in detai
In the first case the child is unable to make a sound and is turning blue, perform abdominal thrusts. If a child is conscious but cant talk or make noise or turning blue, the situation demands abdominal thrusts(Heimlich Maneuver)In most cases it may occurs due to obstruction of the airway by foreign body aspiration.First step is to dislodge the object with back blows and abdominal thrusts.Stand or kneel slightly behind him.Provide support by placing one arm diagonally across his chest and lean him forward.Firmly strike the child between the shoulder blades with the heel of your other hand.Give five of these back blows. Each back blow should be a separate and distinct attempt to dislodge the obstruction. Then do abdominal thrusts.Kneel behind the child and wrap your arms around his waist.Locate his belly button with one or two fingers.Make a fist with the other hand and place the thumb side against the middle of the childs abdomen just above the naval.Grab your fist with your other hand and give fivequick upward thrusts in to the abdomen.Repeat back blows and abdominal thrusts until the object is forced out or the child starts to cough or to make noise. If the child is unresponsive you will need to do a modified version of CPR.The aim is to remove the obstruction and clear the airway.
In second case the patient is unresponsive even after abdominal thrusts. So the next step is to perform CPR.
Make sure the scene is safe, then tap the person in the shoulder and shout Are you ok?to ensure that the person needs help. Check the carotid pulse.Put the heel of your dominant hand at the center of the persons chest.Put your other hand over your dominant hand ,then interlock your fingers.Start chest compressions.perform 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths.Watch the chest fall then do another rescue breath.Repeat the chest compressions and rescue breaths.Continue the cycle and watch for the patients response. Then get the medical service as soon as possible.
