SeCl4 what is the lewis formula, electron-domain geometry, molecular geometry and is it polar or non polar?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solution :-

total valence electrons in the SeCl4 = (1*Se)+(4*Cl)

                                                    = (1*6)+(4*7)

                                                    = 34

Lewis structure is as follows

It have total 5 electron groups around the central atom Se therefore its electron domain geometry is

trigonal bipyramidal

The molecular shape is sawhorse or seesaw because it have 4 bond pair and 1 lone pair of electrons around central atom Se.
