During a formal debate on the hazards of air pollution, one team argues that ozone is helpful to the atmosphere, and the other team argues that it is destructive. Explain why both teams are correct.

Please write clear.

Solutions

Expert Solution

In the above debate both the teams are correct in their saying. Ozone is trace gas of the atmosphere whose concentration is around 0.15 parts per million and the maximum concentration does not cross 15-20 ppm in the stratosphere.

The Ozone present in the upper levels of stratosphere makes a layer, at around 25 kilometers altitude, which is helpful for us. This layer absorbs maximum of the hazardous Ultraviolet Radiation of the sun, preventing it from reaching to surface. This is the reason why life is possible on Earth. Ultraviolet radiation is very dangerous for tissue. So that's why the first team is correct.

In the other hand Ozone present in the lower levels of atmosphere namely the Troposphere Ozone is a hazardous pollutant. It forms a part of the Urban Smog in highly polluted cities. High levels of ozone concentration in lower atmosphere are very harmful to our respiratory system. It can damage our soft tissues of eyes, nose, and whole respiratory system. So that is the reason the second team is also correct. So we can say upper atmosphere Ozone is helpful, whereas the lower atmosphere Ozone is harmful.

6. Air pollution problem. Consider an airshed in which there is one major contributor to air pollution--a cement-manufacturing plant whose annual production capacity is 2.500,000 barrels of cement. Figures are not available to determine whether the plant has been operating at capacity. Although the kilns are equipped with mechanical collectors for air pollution control, the plant still emits 2.0 lb of dust per barrel of cement produced. There are two types of electrostatic precipitators that can be installed to control...

The city of Delhi has some of the very worst air pollution in the world. One key source of that air pollution are motor vehicles. The city is contemplating ways to reduce air pollution from motor vehicles. Suppose they know that the marginal benefits of abatement are equal to MB(a) = 154 -10a, which comes entirely from health benefits to the local population. There is no uncertainty about the benefits of abatement. But, the Delhi government is uncertain about costs....

Air pollution is one critical issue that the United States economy has been struggling to deal with. A vehicle creates a lot of pollution that has negative externality effects in our economy. The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) was designed to reduce American dependence on foreign oil by producing more fuel-efficient vehicles to help curb emissions. Should the government force car manufacturers to increase fuel efficiency standards, or should the government increase fuel taxes? When evaluating this question, discuss the...

True, False, or Uncertain. Acid rain was the topical pollution concern during the 1990s. It was caused by pollutants released into the air (cars, industry, etc). The Coase Theorem is applicable in this case as bargaining can lead to the socially optimal outcome, namely no acid rain.
