Consider the following reaction:
HC2H3O2(aq)+H2O(l)?H3O+(aq)+C2H3O?2(aq)
Kc=1.8
HC2H3O2(aq) + H2O(l) ------ H3O+(aq) +
C2H3O?2(aq)
Initial--- 0.23 M
0
0
Change - x
x
x
Final 0.23 - x
x
x
Note: K = [H3O+][C2H3O?2]/[HC2H3O2]
Therefore,
K = (x)^2/(0.23 -x) = 1.8x10^-5
as we can see Kc is very small therefore x also must be very small , therefore we can neglect x in (0.23-x)^2
so we get
x^2/(0.23) = 1.8x10^-5
or x = 2.03x10^-3 = 0.002303 M
as we know [H3O+] = x = 0.002303 M....... answer
