Consider the given reaction.
MgCO3(s) + 2 HCl(aq) — MgCl2(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)
Calculate the atom economy of this reaction to form carbon dioxide assuming that no other reactions are occurring.
atom economy = _______ %
Solution: Atom economy = 28.025%
Explanation;
MgCO3 + 2 HCl → MgCl2 + H2O + CO2
We know that atom economy = ( total mass of desired product / total mass of reactant ) x 100%
At. wt. of Mg = 24, O = 16, C = 12, H = 1, Cl = 35.5
MgCO3 = 24 + 12 +(3 x 16) = 24+ 12 + 48 =84
2 HCl = 2 x (1 + 35.5) = 2 x 36.5 = 73
Total mass of reactant = 84 + 73 = 157
Total mass of desired product, CO2 = 12 + (2 x 16) = 12 + 32 = 44
atom economy = (44 / 157) x 100% = 28.025%
