Primary Succession - Occurs when a community colonizes a area where no other organism previously inhabitated like rocks,cooled lava where previously valcano errupted.First stage in primary succession is the development of the soil.Primary succession occur in areas where there is lack of soil which is needed for the growth of plants.Lichens are referred to as "pioneer species" because they are the first organism to colonize an area during primary succession.

Lichens are in symbiotic associations with algae,cynobacteria.Lichens secretes acids and other substances that tend to decompose the surfaces(like rocks) on which they live.Breaking down of rocks leads to the formation of soil which supports the life of another organisms(mosses and small plants),when lichens die they provide some organic matter that also contributes to soil.In this way lichens play a very important role in the primary succession.
