Exercise 1: Lab 2-general lab safety-
A physics laboratory contains special equipment to use while you are performing an experiment. Locate each of the items pictured on the following pages in your lab kit, and place a check mark in the appropriate place when you find it(Hanging Mass Set ,Caliper,Spring Scale ,Ramp). After you have completed this, sketch a picture and name any additional items that are located in your lab kit, classroom, or home that are likely to be useful for you in completing these labs.
Include your drawings for five additional pieces of equipment here and include a prediction for each, identifying how you think it could be used in a physics experiment. For example, what physics topic might a ramp help demonstrate? What lab safety precautions will need to be considered?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Well , if you need a general idea about the basic equipments, I could give you some. I've listed out 5 of them which would be commonly seen in any school labs.

1) Screw gauge - A screw gauge is used in finding the thickness more precisely of any object . for example a metal bar or a wooden board. The least order of measurement it can do is 0.01mm

2) Bunsen burner - A bunsen burner can be used to boil liquids in flask or to heat anything. Bunsen burners can be used in experiments which can be used to determine specific heat capacity of liquids. As a safety feature, it is recommended to have gloves and goggles. it is better not to wear clothes that catch fire easily. Use a plastic material apron. A fire extinguisher at the side would always be handy if anything goes wrong.

3) Simple Pendulum- A simple pendulum experiment can be used in determining the acceleration due to gravity. No special safety materials required

4) Voltmeter, Ammeter and a Rheostat - All these come in general with electronic experiments. A voltmeter can be used in determining the potential difference between the ends that they are connected. An ammeter to measure the current and a Rheostat for change in Resistance during the experiments. A combination of these can be seen in experiments which can be used in studying the forward and reverse characteristics of diodes. These equipments are connected to the power supply , so a good footwear is always essential to avoid electric shock, if any. (insulate ourselves from the ground so that electricity may not flow through us to the ground.)

5) Sonometer and a tuning fork - A sonometer can be used to verify the laws of vibration of the stretched string and also to determine the frequency of the tuning fork i.e when the frequency of the force applied matches with the natural frtequency of the body , they produce vibrations with maximum amplitude. No special safety materials required.

8.40 Lab 8e: BankBalance Introduction For this lab, you will use a do-while loop to complete the task. A do-while loop has this basic structure: /* variable initializations */ do{ /* statements to be performed multiple times */ /* make sure the variable that the stop condition relies on is changed inside the loop. */ } while (/*stop condition*/); Despite the structure of the do-while loop being different than that of a for loop and a while loop, the concept...

As a physics demonstration, you want a special bowling ball made to demonstrate exactly 1 kg·m2, so that your students can rotate the ball about its center of mass to get a "feel" for how "big" 1 kg·m2 is. The bowling balls most familiar to your students has a weight of 15.4 pounds and have a circumference of 25.5 inches, but do not have a moment-of-inertia equal to 1 kg·m2. Since the sporting goods manufacturer has no understanding of how...

Excel Lab 2: Regression and Goal Seek In this lab, you will use Excel to determine the equation of the model which best fits a set of ordered pairs obtained from data sets. You will enter data, graph the data, find the equation for the regression model, and then use that equation to make predictions for the dependent variable. You will use the goal seek to make predictions for the independent variable. Then you will consider how accurate your predictions...
