Gloria Steinem said that girls are socialized into their bodies as ornaments and boys are socialized into their bodies as instruments. What does this mean? What is the difference between being an ornament versus being an instrument?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer- Girls are socialized into their bodies as ornaments and boys are socialized into their bodies as instruments means that girls are thought to look beautiful and appealing like an ornament. Their bodies are designed in such a way so as to be appealing to others. As ornaments glitter and shine and look beautiful, so the body of girls should shine and look beautiful.

And the bodies of boys are designed in such a way so as to work like an instrument to help others solve their issues. For example, like a boy has the power to fertilize a woman and so his body is designed in such a way to do this activity and hence it is socialized as instrument.

The difference between being an ornament and being an instrument is that in being an ornament one is more concerned about making oneself appealing to others and being beautiful. And being an instrument means using one's body to solve various issues and to fix things.
