After view the video/website about the Judge Rotenberg center and doing some of your own research, what are your thoughts? Do you think this school should use the procedures it does? Why or why not? What would you change?
The Judge Rotenberg Center (JRC, founded in 1971 as the Behavior Research Institute) is a center in Canton, Massachusetts that has attracted controversy for its previous use of electric shocks to punish undesirable behavior. The practice of using electric shocks on students was banned in 2020 by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). At the time of the ban, the Judge Rotenberg Center was the only school in the United States that used electric shocks on its students. The Judge Rotenbern Center works with children and adults with severe developmental disabilities and emotional or behavioral disorders, and advertises a near-zero rejection and expulsion policy, regardless of severity of behavior or disability. Additionally, the center favors decreased use of medications in favor of systems of punishment. While the Judge Rotenberg center claims to rely heavily on positive reinforcement, a 2006 report by the New York State Education Department found that there was not a significant positive behavior support program present.
I personally think this way of treatment is very hard hitting and can really change the way life works, It can really disbalnace who we are. It may bring us to a level where things never settle for better. WE have to resort to things that make life worth living and we have a purpose in life to live and breathe.
