Ribosomal subunits
Come together in threes to form functional units.
Are composed of mRNA and structural proteins.
Are synthesized in the cytoplasm.
Converge only when mRNA is to be translated.
Are transcribed from the complementary strand of DNA that is used for tRNA transcription

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer: Converge only when mRNA is to be translated

Reason:

Ribosomes considered as molecular machines and they synthesized from nuclear DNA to become smaller subunits and larger subunits in the cytoplasm. These subunits often converge each other to make mRNA translated for amino acid synthesis. Protein synthesis occurs in three steps namely, initiation, elongation and termination. During initiation, the mRNA, tRNA comes together at the ribosome and the translation initiates at the start codon (AUG, codes for methionine).

Imagine a transmembrane protein complex composed of five analogous subunits that together form a hydrophilic pore that spans the cell’s plasma membrane. The pore is formed by five membrane-spanning a-helices, and each one is donated by one of the five subunits respectively. Each α- helix has hydrophilic side chains on one side of the helix and hydrophobic side chains on the opposite side. Propose a possible arrangement of these five α-helices in the membrane.

You mix all the required elements for translation, charged tRNA with amino acids, ribosomal subunits, and mRNA etc.
You mix all the required elements for translation, charged tRNA with amino acids, ribosomal subunits, and mRNA etc., in a test tube. Given that the mRNA has the following sequence, what is/are the polypeptide(s) that could be produced (ignore the lack of start and stop codons) 5' - AGCAGCAGCAGCAGCAGCAGC-3" A. Poly-Ser. B. Poly-Gin. C. Poly-Arg. D. Poly-Met. E. Multiple of the above would be produced.

Fakunding and Hershey mixed [32P]IF2, [3H]fMet-tRNAfMet and AUG, an mRNA substitute, with 30S ribosomal subunits and either (a) GTP or (b) the unhydrolyzable GTP analog GDPCP. Then they centrifuged the mixtures in sucrose gradients and assayed each gradient fraction for radioactive IF2 (blue) and fMet-tRNAfMet (red). How to interpret the results that there is no difference for the binding of IF2 to the ribosome between the addition of GTP and GDPCP in the experiments? Figure 17.8 Formation of 30S initiation complex...
