After using a GC/MS, what additional experiment or experiments could you do in order to determine the concentration of each compound in the unknown?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Apart form GC/MS we can use nuclear magnetic resonance to determine the concentration of each compound in the unknown.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is an analytical chemistry technique used for determining the content and purity of a sample as well as its molecular structure. For example, NMR can quantitatively analyze mixtures containing known compounds. For unknown compounds, NMR can either be used to match against spectral libraries or to infer the basic structure directly. Once the basic structure is known, NMR can be used to determine molecular conformation in solution as well as studying physical properties at the molecular level such as conformational exchange, phase changes, solubility, and diffusion. In order to achieve the desired results, a variety of NMR techniques are available. The basics of NMR are described here. The principle behind NMR is that many nuclei have spin and all nuclei are electrically charged. If an external magnetic field is applied, an energy transfer is possible between the base energy to a higher energy level (generally a single energy gap). The energy transfer takes place at a wavelength that corresponds to radio frequencies and when the spin returns to its base level, energy is emitted at the same frequency. The signal that matches this transfer is measured in many ways and processed in order to yield an NMR spectrum for the nucleus concerned.

In order to determine the critical point in the operations cycle when the business could do this, he decided to talk to the three top executives. (which operation is the critical point and why?) His first conversation was with Brian Chu, V.P. Production. Brian told him that catching crocodiles was the most critical activity for the business since “it is difficult to trap them suckers and you can lose a few limbs in the process if you are not careful.”...

1.     After completing your mutagenesis experiment you set out to determine which gene was responsible. To do so you sequenced the DNA of 100 mutant worms. Describe clearly an experiment in which you could determine the resistivity of a material. The materials include ammeters, voltmeters, batteries, connecting wires, and multiple pieces of wire made of the unknown material, each with different length and cross-sectional area, electronic balance, diffraction grating, a ruler, a caliper and an air track. The resistivity must be obtained as the slope of a graph. What quantities should be plotted along the axes?
