Visualize your weekly grocery list. Choose a “healthy” item that you consume regularly: you may select a food specifically manufactured as part of the diet industry (e.g. a protein bar or vitamin supplement) or simply an item that you continue to buy to combat a perceived deficiency of some nutrient (e.g. carrots). When you have an item in mind, answer the following questions.
Think back to the first time you bought this item. What made you choose it? |
Analyze the message that advertisements for that item convey. A good place to start is by looking at the packaging; TV or print ads may also be relevant. What do the advertisements want you to believe about that product? |
Based on the information in the nutrition label, can you find any obvious holes in the advertisements’ claim? (For instance, if you’ve purchased a protein bar, is it actually high in protein? Are there other active ingredients?) |
Did this messaging play a role your decision to purchase it? If so, explain how it aligned with your health goals. |
Should you continue to purchase this product in the future? Explain why or why not using concepts from this course. |
What advice would you give to a friend who is looking for a new health product to try? What kinds of red flags should your friend look for? |
I got this Sundrop Peanut Butter back in 2010 when I was in teenager for the first time. My parents recommended me to have it, and the advertisement on the TV was also convincing. The advertisement tried to convey a message that the product is very healthy specially for teenagers and will definitely increase their strength and growth. Yes, the product had significant amount of protein and other nutrition as claimed by the advertisement but there was an obvious hole in the calcium quantity. In fact, there was no calcium at all. Yes, the messaging definitely made me go for that particular product and nothing else. With time, it became an instant part of my diet. Every morning I have it with bread and it makes me feel energetic and I can even see the changes it has got in my body. I also have it as my pre-work out meal since it provides me with sufficient amount of protein. As the product is already a part of my daily meal, it's pretty obvious that I am going to use it in the future too because it tastes good, fulfills my protein requirement and does not hit my pocket hard as it is very affordable.
I will ask my friend to add Nutrela Soya Chunks in his meal because it has significant amount of protein(even more than milk and egg) and other nutrients in it and can also help in reducing weight. Additionally it taste good too. But he should avoid having it in a large quantity or more frequently since it is said to have a negative effect on male hormone testosterone.
