If 4.90 g of CuNO3 is dissolved in water to make a 0.850 M solution, what is the volume of the solution?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Given masss of CuNO3 is , m = 4.90 g

Molarity of CuNO3 , M = 0.850 M

Molar mass of CuNO3 = At.mass of Cu + At.mass of N + (3xAt.mass of O)

                                  = 63.5 +14+(3x16)

                                  = 125.5 g/mol

Number of moles , n = mass/molar mass

                                 = 4.90 g / 125.5 (g/mol)

                                 = 0.039 mol

We know that Molarity , M = number of moles / volume in L

                                  0.850 = 0.039 mol / Volume in L

So Volume in L = 0.039 / 0.0850

                        = 0.459 L

                        = 0.459 x 1000 mL                Since 1L = 1000 mL

                        = 459 mL

Therefore the volume of the solution is 459 mL
