A. type of research design (between-subjects or within-subjects)
b. Define the dependent variable.
c. Define the independent variable and its levels
d. Fill in the missing cells of the ANOVA F-table
e. Determine the critical value at a .05 level of significant for the F-value and decide whether the ANOVA result is statistically significant (see Table C.3 in Appendix C of the textbook)
f. Calculate and interpret the eta-squared measure of effect size (if it is a between-subjects designs) or the partial eta-squared measure of effect size (if it is a within-subjects design).
Case 1: A teacher was curious about if his students’ test scores would be affected by how they learn about important science experiments. To look into the situation, he randomly assigned students to 1of 3 groups: students in the first group read about an experiment, students in the second group watched a video, and students in the third group actually conducted the experiment. At the end, all students were given a test about the experiment.
Source of Variation | SS | df | MS | F |
Between groups | 252.72 | 2
Within groups (error) | 157.42 | 17
Total |
(A) This is between subject design
In the design of experiments, a between-subject design is an experiment that has two or more groups of subjects each being tested by a different testing factor simultaneously
(b) dependent variable is scores in test
(c) independent variable is group of students and it has 3 level
1. read about an experiment, 2. watched a video, and 3.actually conducted the experiment.
(d)
Source of Variation | SS | df | MS=SS/df | F=MS(between)/MS(within) |
Between groups | 252.72 | 2 | 252.72/2=126.36 | 126.36/9.26=13.65 |
Within groups (error) | 157.42 | 17 | 157.42/17=9.26
Total | 410.14 | 19 |
critical F(0.05,2,17)=3.59 is less than calculated/observed F=13.65, so result is statistically significant
(f)
Source of Variation | SS | eta-square=SS/Total SS |
Between groups | 252.72 | 252.72/410.14=0.6162 |
Within groups (error) | 157.42 | 157.42/410.14=0.3838 |
Total | 410.14 |
