A Pelton wheel is a turbine that is the main component of a hydroelectric power plant. A Pelton wheel is made of a series of buckets arranged in a circular disk as shown in the figure below. A water jet is shot at the buckets and after striking those buckets emerges out at an angle with respect to the initial jet.
A hydroelectric power plant is to be constructed in which water drops from a lake located at an elevation of 100 meters above the Pelton wheel location. You are consulted as an engineer to advise about what size of Pelton wheel (what size of outer diameter) to buy to produce a power output of 500,000 Watts.
The customer that asked for your consultation wants you to design an experiment with a model Pelton wheel that has a diameter of 50 cm.
Design the required experiment (pick values when you need, introduce variables as needed). Suggest to the customer (according to the output of your experiment) what Pelton wheel diameter is needed to produce the power of 500,000 Watts

Consider a small Pelton wheel hydro turbine, with a total head (reservoir surface to nozzle elevation difference) of Ht = 200 ft. The flowrate to the turbine is 185 gal/s. If the pipe (penstock) feeding the turbine has a length of 1000 ft, a diameter of 19.6 in, and a friction factor of f = 0.005, determine the percent of total head lost in the pipe (penstock). Submit your answer as a percentage but without the percent symbol. ***NOTE: The...

The ...Northwest ...Division of ...Kebalo Electric.. produces ..hydroelectric ...power. The power plant has seven machines that can harvest hydroelectric power on a continuous process such that the capacity of the plant is 5,000 machine hours per month. The plant produces three types of electric power. Energy type "Standard" is not easily stored, energy type "Super" is easier to store and send to more remote regions, and energy type "Bad" has no external market. However, energy type "Bad" is easily transferred...

You are trying to build the small scale hydroelectric power plant on the hill. Potential energy is the main energy that you can use to generate the electricity. How much of the water (in kg) should be in the source to provide the 7 kW of power to the house? Assume that the efficiency of the electricity generator is 0.7 and g=9.8 m/s2 .

Planning is underway for a new hydroelectric power plant, and you have been asked to provide an engineering opinion on the best site for the power plant to be located. Two main sites have been identified for the plant. Site 1 is located at the base of a dam wall, with the waterline located 70 m above the turbine. The location has good accessibility for the construction crew, meaning that they are able to bring in a state-of-the-art turbine-generator system....
