Jacob Riis, How the Other Half Lives (1890)
In this document, Riis mentions: “If this is true from a purely economic point of view, what then of the outlook front the Christian standpoint.” What should our response as Christians be? What does God all us to do in this situation?
How the Other Half Lives by Jacob Riis is one of the most important ground breaking and pioneering works that brought out the division the city has in terms of rich and poor. It’s a photo documentary that aimed at showing the poor living conditions of the poor people who live in the slums to the rich people of the New York city. Thus, he aimed at looking at the photos not from the economic point of view but from a Christian point of view which would mean that showing empathy, mercy and charity in order to improve the conditions of people who live in the slums. This would mean that everyone has a responsibility ton help those who suffer in poverty, illness and homelessness just like the good Samaritan did and just like Christ gave his life for others. Christianity was founded on service, charity and compassion and these photos invited the rich in New York to attend to the plights of the poor who lived in the slums.
