An ant walks on a piece of graph paper straight along the x axis a distance of 10.0 cm in 1.90s . It then turns left 30.0 ? and walks in a straight line another 10.0 cmin 1.70s . Finally, it turns another 70.0 ? to the left and walks another 10.0 cm in 1.60s .
1.Determine the x component of the ant's average velocity.
2.Determine the y component of the ant's average velocity
3.Determine the magnitude of ant's average velocity.
4.Determine the direction of ant's average velocity.
as all questions are related to velocity, its better to consider
the final end point first which is :
x = 10+10 cos (30 degree) + 10 cos (30 + 70 degrees) =
16.9237
y = 10 sin (30 degree) + 10 sin (30 + 70 degrees) = 14.848
total time =1.90+1.70+1.60=5.2
a) x component of the ant's average velocity = distance/total
time
=16.9237/5.2
= 3.254 cm/sec
b) y component of the ant's average velocity = distance/total
time
= 14.848/5.2
= 2.8553 cm/sec
c) the magnitude of ant's average velocity = sqrt(3.254^ 2 +
2.8553^2 )
= 4.3291cm/sec
d) the direction of ant's average velocity = tan inverse
(2.8553/3.254 )
= 41.266 degrees with the positive x axis
