Malware is intrusive software that is designed to damage
and destroy computers and computer systems. Malware is a
contraction for “malicious software.”
malware typically consists of code developed by cyberattackers,
designed to cause extensive damage to data and systems or to gain
unauthorized access to a network.
Examples of common malware includes viruses, worms, Trojan viruses,
spyware, adware, and ransomware.
Malware is a catch-all term for any type of malicious software,
regardless of how it works, its intent, or how it’s
distributed.
Each type of malware has its own unique way of causing havoc, and
most rely on user action of some kind. Some strains are delivered
over email via a link or executable file. Others are delivered via
instant messaging or social media. Even mobile phones are
vulnerable to attack. It is essential that organizations are aware
of all vulnerabilities so they can lay down an effective line of
defense.
A virus is a specific type of malware that
self-replicates by inserting its code into other programs. It is a
program written to enter to your computer and damage or alter your
files /data. (Computer viruses have been prominent since almost the
beginning of the commercial internet: The first one was created in
1982 for the Apple II, and other versions quickly followed.)
Viruses spread by attaching themselves to legitimate files and
programs, and are distributed through infected websites, flash
drives, and emails. A victim activates a virus by opening the
infected application or file. Once activated, a virus may delete or
encrypt files, modify applications, or disable system
functions.
Well , The terms "virus" and "malware" are often used interchangeably. However , they are technically different as explained above .
