Why does not baitite occur in the continuous cooling transformation diagram?
Ans. In continuous cooling curves of transformation diagram phase chages i.e
occurs in an alloy system.
It consists of following the temperature is a function of the time as different alloys in the system are very slowly cooled.
From phase diagram specific information can be obtained only if temperature and composition are specified.
We know that banite formation only takes place if the samples has already been quenched below TTT diagram. But above martensite start line at 220°C is observed.
Slow cooling process produce coarse structure and fast cooling process fine structure. Hence it can be observed that the banite camca be produced by the continuous cooling.
To produce banite, the sample is then maintain at this temperature 220°C for substantial period of time till entire austenite converts into banite. because austenite when cooled below 550-500°C result in banite formation.
This process is called Austempering. Brittle and thick metals are suitable for Austempering.
In steel also the toughest form of steel are Austempered steel.
