Immobilization for prolonged bed rest is associated with several healthcare issues. It mainly affects the musculoskeletal system and the cardiovascular system. The musculoskeletal system requires regular activity to maintain bone density, strength of muscle tissues and prevention of contractures. It also affects cardiovascular health. Normal activity helps in preventing venous pooling or stasis which is a risk factor for thrombotic events.

In the musculoskeletal system, the hazards include,:

• Contractures in muscles due to prolonged immobility
• Osteoporosis due to loss of bone density due to inactivity
• Decreased strength of muscles.
• Wasting of muscles
• Joint degenerative changes

In the cardiovascular system, the hazards include:

• Deep vein thrombosis due to prolonged stasis. Pulmonary lung embolism. Cerebral thrombotic events.
• Decreased cardiac reserve and function
• Pressure ulcers due to inadequate perfusion to pressure areas

Other issues:

• Decreased lung capacity
• Susceptibility for respiratory infections
• Infected bed sores
