You are the Production Department manager at Kibby and Strand, and last month there were complaints from customers that the quality of the products shipped to them was lacking. Some shirts were labeled with incorrect sizes and girl’s shorts had weak stitching that did not meet specifications. The Operations Manager tasks you to prepare a plan for conducting a Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to identify the causes of these quality issues. In addition, he recently read the article 3 Ways to Manage Garment Quality Control and prepare a paper detailing how the quality inspections in the article can be implemented within Kibby and Strand.

The student is to create the RCA plan and paper based on knowledge learned in the scenario, and post it in the discussion. Note: it is not possible to actually conduct the RCA and document findings because the data is not provided in the scenario.

The RCA plan and paper should be prepared in a single Microsoft™ Word document, and then attached to the unit discussion thread. There is no minimum or maximum in terms of the word count; however, the response should explicitly address all required components of this discussion assignment. The document should be prepared consistent with the APA writing style (6th edition) and reflect higher level cognitive processing (analysis, synthesis and or evaluation).

Expert Solution

Kibby and Strand Company is facing complaints from customers that the quality of the products shipped to them was lacking. Some shirts were labeled with incorrect sizes and girl’s shorts had weak stitching that did not meet specifications. I being the operation manager have been tasked to come up with a root cause analysis plan to identify causes of the quality issues and find solutions to improve customer satisfaction.

The core idea behind Root Cause Analysis is that ongoing problems are best solved by eliminating the root problem, instead of applying temporary solutions that fail to resolve recurring issues.

RCA process includes:

  1. The first step is to define clearly the problem facing Kibby and Strand
  2. We analyze the issue which in this case, customers are receiving low-quality products from Kibby and Strand. We find out why shirts were labeled with incorrect sizes and girl’s shorts had weak stitching or if the raw materials were of low standards from the suppliers.
  3. How can the problem facing customers of Kibby and Strand be fixed? I should work with my team to find a solution facing our customers to regain their satisfaction.
  4. My production team should implement the solution and inform the customers that the problem is now resolved, apologizes for any inconvenience and assures them that product quality is their core focus.
  5. Kibby and Strand should keep on monitoring the product quality to prevent future problems and also gradually improve on it.

Upgrades and maintenance of the production machinery of Kibby and Strand Company should be done regularly to prevent defective products. The company should improve the working conditions of the employees to reach maximum productivity. Each time Kibby and Strand Company faces a problem in the production or any other department it should strive to find a permanent solution to eliminate future occurrence.
