The process of interpersonal communication in the movie fireproof could be understood as follows:

  • the degenerative communication spiral: this is the concept that shows how misunderstanding as well as miscommunications are responsible in spoiling relationships of two people. This has the potential of progressively spoiling the relationship of a person. Here , Caleb and Catherine have been shown to be involved in such a spiral.
  • defensive communication: through this concept, on going problems or conflicts within a relationship could be understood, again seen in Caleb and Catherine. Through this behavior, the partner is made to realize that the ideas they are propagating are wrong, and yours are right. Both c and c feel under appreciated and this in turn let's to problems in their marital relationship.
  • flat brain tango: as a result of emotional over load, there is exchange of hurtful language among both C and C. The recipient, on hearing such language, tends to respond in a defensive manner, and further they would be retaliating. Caleb, who spends most his time on internet watching po-rn and Catherine's retaliation occurs by having an affair with someone who is kind to her. There is lack of self disclosure.
  • meta messages: the indirect way of communicating. Here, the individual does not express his true desires through direct words, but overlays them with messages, expecting the other person to figure out. Catherine thought her flirting with the physician might send a message to Caleb, but that was an incorrect method.
