Heroine is an opioid .Nursing intervention for an heroine addict
mainly consider to major goal - 1) abstinence from drug .2)
physical , psychiatric and psychosocial well being of patient.
So considering it and the symptoms which can be seen due to
intoxication such as euphoria , drowsiness , hypotension ,
disorientation, impairment of memory attention and judgement
,decreased respiration , psychomotor retardation ,slurred speech ,
shock ,coma and seizure and sometimes death too
Also considering withdrawal symptoms which are irritability,
rhinorrhea ,diaphoresis,cramps,nausea and vomiting , muscle aches
,chills , fever ,lacrimation and diarrhea.
NURSING INTERVENTIONS-
- Asses vital signs of patient as patient may have hypotension
and high fever due to withdrawal and intoxication
- Obtain information regarding drug quantity and type and when it
is taken
- Remove the unnecessary stimuli and approach with calm and non
judgmental manner
- Monitor intake and output of patient to eliminate the risk of
fluid and electrolyte imbalance
- Initiate the seizure precautions ensuring patients safety by
it
- Hydrate the patient as risk of fluid volume deficit due to
vomiting and diarrhea
- Provide bismuth salicylate if ordered to manage diarrhoea and
acetaminophen for muscle aches on physician's order
- Use security devices if necessary and prescribed to ensure
safety and prevent harm of self and others by patient
- Provide fluids and electrolyte as tolerated to reduce the
symptom
- Collect blood and urine sample for drug screening.Note if
overdose
- Prevent overdose by administration of opioid antagonist
naloxone if prescribed
- Monitor vital signs hourly to note if any change
- Administer medication as prescribed to manage withdrawal
symptoms
- Orient the client frequently and maintain minimal stimuli in
environment
- Direct the patient's focus to drug or substance abuse
problem
- Assist the client to identify situation which precipitate in
angry feelings
- Assist the client to uss assertive techniques to complete need
rather than manipulation to meet the need
- Assist the client to explore strength and weaknesses and
encourage to focus on strength while losing control
- Encourage the patient in participating in init activities
.Engage the patient in doing physical activity and enhancing mental
strength
- Encourage the patient to participate in group therapy and
support therapy.
