Are bad people or bad systems the primary cause of ethical problems? Which do you believe was the fundamental factor in the ethical dilemma surrounding the Tuskegee Study?
I personally don't believe that there are bad people and good people. There are only bad situations and good situations. In the instace of Tuskegee experiment, this is the fault of bad systems and we shouldn't be blaming others for performing it. Yes, I believe it is unethical to have the experiment conducted. Because, Some of the participants in the study suffered adverse effects, ranging from paralysis of limbs due to an extremely dangerous spinal tap procedure used by the researchers to get fluids from the spinal cords of the patients, to extreme neuronal damages, some died from advance syphilitic lesions, wives were infected, and many of the offspring of the participants were born with congenital syphilis. In the meantime, even though penicillin became the traditional cure for Syphilis in the mid 1940s, the US Administration has been very busy ensuring that the men of the "Tuskegee test" are denied treatment. Also when many people became blind and insane due to advanced syphilis, physicians declined treatment and kept on studying their subjects until their recommended "final stage" was autopsy. The government provided a burial plan, at most USD fifty dollars, to cover the expense of a cap and sepulture, to ensure that their families agreed to this final practice.
The above findings indicate that the medical experts involved in the study of tuskegee syphilis did not follow criteria for ethical science. The study subjects 'interests have clearly been infringed. The Tuskegee study addressed many ethical problems, including informed consent, sexism, paternalism, biased research topic selection, malice, the facts, and justice.
