A population of squirrels is separated into two groups by flooding and sea level rise, which brings in a new stream. The squirrels can’t cross the stream. Over time, the two populations become increasingly different and when members of the population are united, they are unable to reproduce together. This is an example of

spontaneous generation

sympatric speciation

the bottleneck effect

allopatric speciation

Solutions

Expert Solution

Allopatric speciation (allo= other and patric= place) means speciation due to geographical isolation. This geographical isolation happened due to the geographical barriers like mountain ranges and water bodies. So, when a population get separated due to this geographical barriers, random mutations accumulated in these two population. Because these two populations are reproductively isolated and also the random mutations accumulated steadily, these populations diverged from each other. That means they are becoming distinct from each other, so if any case we bring them close to each other, they will not mate with each other, because now they are incompatible to reproduce with each other. So, due to geographical barrier a population of a species get separated and become distinct from each other in allopatric speciation.

Same thing in this case, a population of squirrels is separated into two groups by flooding and sea level rise, which brings in a new stream. The squirrels can’t cross the stream. Over time, the two populations become increasingly different and when members of the population are united, they are unable to reproduce together. So, it is an example of allopatric speciation.

One of the major concerns related to climate change is sea level rise. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has estimated that we are likely going to see sea level rise of around three feet by 2100. However, these estimates have come under heavy criticism in recent years as being far too conservative. Why are the IPCC estimates so conservative (i.e. what information does the IPCC not include in its models or estimates of sea level rise)? According to...

A hypothetical population of 16000 squirrels has two alleles, FB and FW, for a gene that codes for fur color. The table below describes the phenotype of a squirrel with each possible genotype, as well as the number of individuals in the population with each genotype. genotype phenotype (fur color) # individuals in population FBFB black 8000 FBFW gray 6000 FWFW white 2000 In this population, p=0.6875 and q=0.3125. The expected numbers of individuals with each phenotype are 7562.5 black,...

Background Information: A large population of squirrels is split into two equal sized subpopulations (A and B) by the formation of a deep, rushing river that goes between them. This prevents gene flow since the squirrels can neither swim nor fly. A powerful magician living near population A loves these squirrels and the traits they exhibit very much, and performs a spell that prevents any mutations from occurring in that group. This magician is practically immortal, so the spell continues...
