In wireless network snooping is possible. What are the positive aspects of snooping?

Solutions

Expert Solution

a. In wireless networks snooping is indeed possible. A classic example of this is Wireshark which is used to analyze wireless packets in the vicinity. If not proper cryptography is used, it can even help decipher the message and data in the packet. Proper protocols thus need to be followed for wireless transfer of data for security.

Various WIFI Heat Mappers are also available in custom devices that can provide the position of access points and RSSI strength of the respective signals.

IP Spoofing along with MAC spoofing also provides unauthorized access to a wireless network to a third party. This can result in the snooping of an outside agent into the network. Various apps also like Fing are available for monitoring details of wireless networks around you.

b. White hat snooping can measure the health of the wireless network and introduce the admin to vulnerabilities in their network.

Snooping can also help penetrate illegal organizations' networks and access information.

Profiling of users for legal purposes has been possible through wireless networks only, collection of data points for targeted user experience.

Structural engineers use wireless sensor networks to monitor the condition of dams and bridges. An article describes an experiment in which accelerometers were placed on the Golden Gate Bridge for the purpose of estimating vibration modes. For 18 vertical modes, the system was underdamped (damping ratio < 1). Following are the damping ratios and frequencies for those modes. Damping Ratio Frequency (Hz) Damping Ratio Frequency (Hz) 0.3 2.72 0.5 1.98 0.3 2.84 0.6 0.77 0.3 3.77 0.6 1.26 0.4 2.07...

A nursery operator is considering installing a wireless sensor network that will control irrigation automatically to keep moisture at a preset level. She currently uses 80,000,000 gallons of water a year. The automated irrigation system will cut water use by one-half. The system requires an initial investment of $50,000 and will last 25 years. The nursery operator can finance this investment over a 25-year period at a fixed interest rate of 10%, compounded annually. a. Calculate the annualized cost of...
