Is the representation of the Persians in the movie 300 distorted?
Yes, the representation of the Persians is distorted.
The movie demonized the Persians, everything that was depicted in the movie about the Persians was untrue. I have learned that what Spartans did in Thermopyles was magnificent, that they did not match any enemy but what they did there was really magnificent because it was achieved against a very brave, worthy and glorious enemy (Persians were equally brave). Very few people understand this point of view.
What social issues of 2007 (or even the present) resonate against this representation?
The major social issue which resonates in this representation was the sense of racism and greatness of one race over another. Movie projected one race (Spartans or Greeks) better than Persians. This was an exaggeration and unjust admiration of only one race. The same is happening today in the US where institutions are playing bad to divide people on the basis of color (race) such as Black & White Americans.
