EHR are developed in a way that automatically collects, store, and retrieves of patient health information. It helps the organization in a number of ways. It makes a great impact on healthcare administration and billing. It also helps the physicians to take quick decision. But 60 - 80 percent of the EHR projects are failed all over the world. Many reasons were found behind this.
Technical Failure:
About 20 percent of the EHR systems are failed installations. The installation of wrong hardware and software implementation results in technical issues. Wireless connectivity also causes the problem in the EHR system.
Financial failure:
EHR system has potential benefits but it is too expensive to implement. Economic ups and down and licensing cost all are obstacles for EHR system. Changing of system and updating of software are too costly.
Failure of stakeholders:
EHR has no specific goals and strategic goals. EHR vendor is not following the system regularly. This results in challenges to the healthcare professional and other staff. They often feel frustrated and lack confidence. Lack of training to the health professionals is another issue in the use of EHR system.
Unreliable Infrastructure:
The IT system has a weak and unreliable infrastructure. Many EHR systems have slow response and terrible issues due to fault in the infrastructure. Many software affects the system productivity. Lack of interoperability results in poor coordination of care in the health delivery.
Change Management:
The change management disrupts the EHR process. The EHR system should meet the organizational goals and cultures. For Example, if the EHR does not meet the organizational goals of future needs show a poor change of management system.
Other issues:
Larger implementation tends to be slowing down of clinical work. The absence of policies and standards to implement the EHR system. Shortage of IT specialists and lack of efficient vendors all result in project failure. Difficulty in process of transforming paper-based health records into electronic based. Lack of planning, lack of investment, lack of leadership results in the failure of projects. EHR has implemented to improve the quality of healthcare but the organization has to understand the need for investment for the successful implementation.
