You are the HIM director at an acute care facility in your local city,. You are required to create a program and develop policies that a support a cultural of diversity at the facility. What would you include in your program? What policies might you create? Write and outline for your program and a summary of three policies you would create for the program, and explain why this program and these policies are important in the workplace.
HIM directors are highly trained in the business aspects of health care, including overseeing the integrity of all clinical and financial data.
Every human being is a member of many cultures. Culture influences an individual's belief, behaviour, practices and even outcome of medical treatments.
To support cultural diversity as a HIM director I conduct a programme called cultural competence in the institution. The programme will follow six steps in its journey. They are
1. Involve patients in their own health care.
2. Learn about culture starting with our own
3. speak the local language
4. Ask the right questions and look for the answer
5. Pay attention to financial issues
6. Find resources and form partnerships.
The policies developed in workplace in order to encourage cultural diversity are the provider should
* Has the knowledge to make accurate health assessment, one which takes into consideration a patients background and culture.
* Has the ability to convey that assessment to the patient, to recognize culture based beleifs about health and to devise treatment plans with respect to their beliefs. And
* Is willing to incorporate models of health and health care delivery from variety of cultures into the biomedical frameworks.
All these program and policies are important in healthcare because there are many research report suggest that cultural competence care is important to know the root cause of disease and early cure of it is possible with such care. Use of emergency rooms can be reduced to great extent by providing a cultural competent care.
