A song that has made lasting impression on me is
“Three wooden crosses” by Randy Travis
The song speaks about four travelers who were headed to Mexico with their own agenda. On the way the bus meets with an accident and three of them dies. Two of the travelers were a call girl and a preacher. During his last few moments, the preacher managed to give his blood stained bible to the call girl and asked her to be a good person.
Throughout the song the writer and singer reflects on the fact that our lives are temporary and whatever we make in this life cannot be carried with us to the afterlife. Thus it is not important what we take. It is rather important what we leave behind. In the story the preacher left behind a lasting impression and faith for a call girl. She later gave birth to a boy and read that bible to him. This boy became the preacher at the local congregation where the singer attends Sunday mass.
Overall the message of the song is that do not hang on to your possessions but rather try to make (positive) impact on others’ lives. This is a strong message and we often forget this in our daily rat race. This is why this song has made a lasting impression on me.
